"There's a phrase describing that kind of thing: "Heads I win, tails you lose". It's the rigging of the rules of the game such that you can never lose. It's totally antithetical to (drum roll, please) freethought." You seem to be equating freethought with "being nice to all sides of an issue". This is not rational. Freethought means to be open to all possibilities, but freethought must yield to reason when evidence is accumulated. To ignore the massive epistemic and scientific evidence for materialism, is not freethought... but willful ignorance.
